  1. MXL microphones have a history and reputation of sounding cheap. They are mostly bought and marketed to people unfamiliar with the world of recording – I would not listen to these recommendations. New microphones are even worse, practically toys and misleading in the title of a condenser microphone. And dynamic microphones do an absolutely terrible job of miking piano. The piano is a very hard instrument to the mic – many microphones make it sound tinny and all-around terrible. I would recommend the AT2020 or AT2050 by Audio Technica. AT is a very reputable company, producing quality equipment that is used up to the professional level, such as the AT4047. If you have more money to spend, the C214 by AKG is also a great microphone for miking piano. The AKG P220 is also a great budget AKG microphone for general purposes.

  2. I have a Young Chang baby grand in my living room along with 2 Roland synthesizers and a large Roland state speaker. I mainly play low key improv and some classical, sometimes with an accompanying guitarist and vocalist. I would appreciate your recommendations for recording the piano, guitar, and vocals together or separately on top of each other at different budget levels. I am not a pro, just a 76 yr old retired businessman that used to play in rock and blues bands in Memphis and California. I also would like to be able to add bass and drums in the future. I would like the capability to have the option to record directly on a CD. The grand is the primary instrument I want to record now with a real clean and accurate sound around others as I want.
    Thanks,
